Try This!

Place three bowls in front of you in a row.

Use 3x5 cards or small pieces of paper to write down each thought as it comes into your mind. Use the bowl on your right for thoughts about the future. Use the bowl on your left for thoughts about the past. And use the bowl in the center for thoughts about the present.

Spend at least fifteen minutes on this exercise. As your mind generates a thought, write it down and place it in the appropriate bowl. Continue to do this for each thought. After fifteen minutes you can stop. Now look at the bowls. If you’re like most of us, the bowl in the center has the fewest 3x5 cards or pieces of paper. Don’t judge yourself. It’s expected. This is the natural tendency of the mind. That’s why mindfulness can be or is so challenging.

kelly This exercise was particularly challenging for me. The bowl in the center had very few cards. The majority of the cards were in the “future” bowl. Right now, I’m focusing a lot on what career path I might want to pursue after college, and how I can successfully prepare myself to get a job. So it makes sense that my thoughts are more future-focused at the moment. What I took away from this exercise is that I’d like to channel this energy into the present. I recognize that it is important to think about my future and what I want from it—one way that I can achieve my goals is to think about what I can do in the present to work toward what I want. What can I focus on right now that will serve me in the future? One idea: I’ll focus on my schoolwork and seek out opportunities to explore my academic interests in new ways.
